Yes. You can pay using Visa and MasterCard debit cards.

There are a couple of exceptions:

  • the Maestro card is only accepted in Germany.
  • PREPAID cards are accepted online however they are not accepted at the counter which means a non-PREPAID card must be shown at the rental station (together with the PREPAID card). A PREPAID card can be used to pay for the rental at the end of the vehicle hire.

Remember, the name on the card must match the driving licence of the main driver. Someone else can’t pay on your behalf.

And don’t forget to bring your payment card when you collect your rental.

The excess is the amount you pay if something goes wrong during your journey. For example, if you have an accident or your personal belongings are stolen from your hire vehicle. The amount you pay depends on the vehicle you hire, which country you hire it in and whether you choose to reduce the excess by upgrading your level of cover.

When you hire a vehicle with us, you’ll automatically receive third party, vehicle damage (Collision Damage Waiver) and vehicle theft cover to safeguard you on your journey. If you book on the US website you may find that vehicle damage and vehicle theft cover are not included, as some American credit cards provide insurance for car hire.

Third party cover is the basic level you need to hire a vehicle – that’s why we always include it. Should you damage another vehicle or passengers and their property, you won’t have to pay for repairs or injuries.

But, if you have an accident you will still need to pay a fixed excess fee – unless you upgrade your cover. Find out how much you pay depending on what you hire and where you hire it. We also offer Personal Accident Insurance in case you’re injured in an accident.

We want you to enjoy as much freedom as possible – the road is yours, after all. Unfortunately some border crossings are restricted and you can’t drive certain hire vehicles from one country to another.

You can drive your hire car from the UK into mainland Europe, but you will need to take out Continental Cover first. This insures you to drive abroad. It also provides breakdown assistance.

You can't book Continental Cover online, so please call us at least two days before driving abroad so we can arrange it for you. You’ll find our phone number in your email confirmation.

We recommend returning your car to the same location you collect it from, because dropping it at another location will cost more. See the full list of locations on the Continental Cover page.

Yes - the additional driver will also need to be present to show their driving licence in person as well.

If you’re driving abroad, you and your additional driver will also need to bring your International Driving Permits.

But in some countries, such as China, you can only drive if you have a Chinese driving licence. It’s always worth checking with the location first.

Discover whether you need an International Driving Permit for your trip and how to apply on the gov.uk website
